Around Nassau Town they did roam
28 January 2012
We were now tied up to what we thought was the correct location to dock. Michael hailed Polar Bear to tell them that there was a dock available for them as well. Forty-five minutes later they motored right past us ignoring Michael who was waving them to their slip. They just kept going and actually docked at a different marina which is actually where we were supposed to be as well. As it turns out, the marina where were we docked was a lot cheaper and also included water and electricity. It was further discounted to a 1.00 per foot if you stayed for four days. We had a clear view of Atlantis and the Riu (the place where fellow EYC club members Tommy and Cindy and Chris and Nadia got married) right from our slip.
Shopping in the Bahamas is also interesting. For those you that are planning to go to the Bahamas....bring cash as there is a 5% surcharge for using credit cards. The supermarkets have everything you would want sometimes but things like produce and imported goods could be very limited just before the supply boats are in. Anything that is imported is very expensive. For example pringles at 3.79, toilet paper at double the price and frozen foods at least double. But if you aren't fussy you can find food that is affordable. For example we bought 3 pounds of wahoo for $10.00. We were able to find beer under 40.00 a case which was not a bad price. Little did we know that this would be a deal compared to the islands further down the chain?
The folks here are very friendly and eager to help or to send you of to someone else to help.
The internet while intermittent was at least available some of the time and if the band width wasn't exceeded by excessive demand the Skype would also work. This was great for staying in touch with the family and friends at home.
There are also a least four marine stores with a good selection of boat parts and fishing paraphilia. We bought a pole spear with great expectation of lobster feasts down the road. There is more to come on that fantasy.
Here we reconnected with STAR IV, John and Hanna and their 50 foot Jeanneau also from Toronto. They arrived the evening before our planned departure. Two days later we left with Polar Bear and Star IV for the Exumas. Stay tuned...more pictures will be posted SOMETIME SOON.
