Mayaguana April 6
29 May 2012
We arrived in Mayaguana at the southern tip of the Bahamas at noon after a pleasant night sail with no issues of any kind. The water here was spectacular, very clear and easy to see to the bottom about 50 feet. We worked our way amongst the reefs and were able to anchor about a quarter of a mile from the government dock.
The next day we needed to refuel for the next leg of our journey to The DR and then onto Puerto Rico roughly 400 miles. We phoned the fuel station only to be informed that if no longer existed. The self-proclaimed world famous Scully then contacted over the VHF and offered to get the fuel for 6.85 a U.S. Gallon and a $50.00 delivery charge. So off to the government dock I went with 6 jerry jugs to pick up the 60 gallons of fuel we needed just in case we had to motor all the way to Puerto Rico. This endeavor took most of the day as the tide went out dropping to levels that wouldn't allow the dingy to move. Scully and I sent the day with beers and discussion of the world's problems and the appropriate solutions. Finally I was able to get the fuel to the boat at 6 pm and we were ready to go the rest of our journey. Unfortunately the weather was not cooperating and we had to stay for another two days.
This allowed us to take part in the home coming held on the other side of the island. We received the royal welcome and were taken out in the back of a pick-up truck for a great feast of fish, pork and beer. This particular island seemed to be run by the males as we only saw women in the cooking and the men sat around in the town square drinking.
The snorkeling was great in the area with lots of sea life and coral reefs.
Finally there was a weather window that would allow us to make our next move.
