A Change of Heart

We started the engine just after 10am and made our way out of Utsira's south harbour, through the channel markers. As soon as we cleared the headland sufficiently to go head to wind, we raised the mainsail and then the foresail. There was more wind than the forecast 5 to 6 knots and there was quite a swell, probably due to the wind whipping round the island, which sits 18m off the west coast. We put our life jackets on. Suddenly we were in an area of sea which was relatively flat but we could see a line of white water off the port bow. A yacht was bouncing through it, heading towards us. By the time we reached the projection of the white water line it had fizzled out but the swell returned. We were sailing well at around 6 knots, 60 degrees off the wind, which allowed us to cut beneath a reef. Beyond the reef we would need to head due north for Rovaer and the wind was northerly. With the heavy swell we had a change of heart and decided we didn't really fancy tacking into the wind for 7 miles, especially as the forecast for Wednesday was for stronger southerlies, so we changed course to 130 degrees and headed towards the coast. Our destination was Akrehamn, which would have been first stop on our return from Rovaer. When we reached the little islands outside Akrehamn, we paused to do some fishing but we were unsuccessful. We put some revs on and picked up the leading lines through the reefs and then the red and green channel markers. Akrehamn has a long breakwater on the outside and it's very sheltered once you reach the harbour area at the end. We moored up on the town quay, where we stroked a couple of cats and fed the swans and their signets. We couldn't see any electric points or shower facilities but that wasn't a problem. However, a local man pointed out a visitor berth on the wall by the Akrehamn Smabatforeng (small boat club), which is where the facilities are, so we moved. Just in time! Another yacht and a motorcruiser arrived, looking surprised to see the berth already taken. We suggested the yacht raft up to us but the pair of boats moved on to the town quay. We headed off to explore the small town and take a few photos. Then, not having passed the supermarket, we searched on Google maps. 8 minutes walk in the opposite direction. The REMA 1000 was located in a small shopping mall, where we also found a Biltema, which is similar to Halfords but also stocks basic boating supplies. We were after some reducers, as we had purchased a gas conversion kit, for Norwegian bottled gas but this still would not fit onto our gas pipe. We found what we needed, so that would save another bus ride from Stavanger to the Maritim shop. We bought some chicken for tea and a couple of beers and retraced our steps to the boat. After tea we put some music on and had a singalong - Dido, Alison Moyet, Simon and Garfunkel (live from Central Park) and finally Paul Simon's Graceland. Then it was time for bed and another day of our sabbatical was over.
