28 July 2010 | the ITCZ
Andrew
We hit the ITCZ , almost as advertised. The weather forecast said 8 deg N, we fired up the engine due to lack of wind at 7:57. To fill in the hours motoring, I reconnected the two water tanks, which has been isolated to prevent the starboard tank draining through the galley sink vent due to the heel we had been experiencing. Unbeknownst to me, we had saltwater ingression into the tank (via the topsides vent, which did spend some time underwater), so now we have slightly salty water. No good for drinking, but OK for cooking, and great for doing laundry! Fortunately we still have 70L in containers, and can also make water if the rain gods don't show up in the ITCZ. Our other dilemma, given the demise of our Garmin, is to calculate daily log mileage. We had been using the odometer feature for this. So I plotted our 12 midnight waypoints onto the computer, and found the following: Day 1: 76.6 2: 198 3: 131 4: 145 5: 181 6: 146 7: 143 8: 192 9: 176 10:200 11: 152 As these results surprised me, perhaps other cruisers can explain why daily mileages appear higher than hourly boat speed would indicate. At this stage, I'm assuming the map doesn't lie! Cheers, Team Mulan
