The gift of time

As we get closer to home, people are starting to ask what the best and worst part of the trip has been.

Updates

The last 3 blogs were posted after the fact as the sailblogs website was down. I posted them on facebook and was just able to repost here. I also downloaded some photos on facebook which I will copy here when I am able. If you'd like to see the photos on facebook, just search for jamey myron. They're on my site in photos/albums. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read about our adventures and keep in touch with us. It's good to have a touchstone when drifting around!

An Uneventful Day

No big stories today. No water in the boat, lost ground tackle or storms. The boat stayed clean, the kids got along and the weather was beautiful. Not much to write about, but it was amazing to experience. It was perfection. I'm not sure if it's because of or in spite of our recent adventures, but we [...]

It takes about 20 seconds

We left Norfolk early this morning in beautiful weather. The seas were flat, winds were calm and almost no traffic in the harbor (which is rare in itself). Things were so calm that Bob had let me sleep. He got up around 6 to get us going. Just outside the harbor, he passed across the channel to head [...]

Georgetown, SC

We arrived in Georgetown SC today around lunchtime. The scenery here along Winyah Bay is stunning, though we haven’t adjusted to the water color in the states yet. It seems so murky compared to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Getting older

Now that we are back in the US, one of the girls' favorite thing to do is call and talk to friends. Being away from friends has been one of the hardest part of this trip for them.

NYCe day!

We're in New York! It's exciting for us not only because of the list of things the girls want to do here (American Girl Store, sadly enough, is at the top), but also because this is the farthest we've sailed from home. Everything from here will be totally new territory for us.

We had a long day yesterday from Branford, CT to just outside the East River. We anchored for the night, waiting for the tides to be right to come down (up?) the East River and into the Hudson, where our anchorage is.

The weather was incredible today! We had a bit of stress coming in because NYC police had closed off the section of river near the UN building. We were redirected to the other side of Roosevelt Island. Unfortunately, this side had a draw bridge that hadn't gotten the word yet. There were 4 boats circling around in some pretty strong current at Hell Gate waiting for either permission to go to the other side of the island or for the bridge to raise. Luckily, the bridge came up before anything bad happened.

It was clear sailing after that. Such a great way to enter New York. We were a bit disappointed when we came into the marina as they had no moorings. So, we've dropped an anchor in the Hudson. The currents here are very strong and reverse 180 degrees with the tides, so we are hanging out until after the tide turns and our boat swings round, just to make sure it will be OK. Would be such a bummer to have your boat go drifting down the Hudson!

So, we're just waiting for the tide before we head to shore. The girls can't wait.

I'm not sure how long we'll stay in NYC, a few days at least. Then we'll travel into lower New York bay and set the hook until the weather is right to travel down to the Delaware Bay. It's pretty exposed there, so we want to catch the wind and weather just right.

We're having a great time (despite Alyssa's injuries) and are excited for the next leg of our trip! (also excited for showers!!!)
