The gift of time

As we get closer to home, people are starting to ask what the best and worst part of the trip has been.

Updates

The last 3 blogs were posted after the fact as the sailblogs website was down. I posted them on facebook and was just able to repost here. I also downloaded some photos on facebook which I will copy here when I am able. If you'd like to see the photos on facebook, just search for jamey myron. They're on my site in photos/albums. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read about our adventures and keep in touch with us. It's good to have a touchstone when drifting around!

An Uneventful Day

No big stories today. No water in the boat, lost ground tackle or storms. The boat stayed clean, the kids got along and the weather was beautiful. Not much to write about, but it was amazing to experience. It was perfection. I'm not sure if it's because of or in spite of our recent adventures, but we [...]

It takes about 20 seconds

We left Norfolk early this morning in beautiful weather. The seas were flat, winds were calm and almost no traffic in the harbor (which is rare in itself). Things were so calm that Bob had let me sleep. He got up around 6 to get us going. Just outside the harbor, he passed across the channel to head [...]

Georgetown, SC

We arrived in Georgetown SC today around lunchtime. The scenery here along Winyah Bay is stunning, though we haven’t adjusted to the water color in the states yet. It seems so murky compared to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Getting older

Now that we are back in the US, one of the girls' favorite thing to do is call and talk to friends. Being away from friends has been one of the hardest part of this trip for them.

Turning of the tides

23 September 2010 | Hudson River, NYC
Jamey
Our first night in NYC, we'd set the anchor and things had been going OK. It was a bit stessful for us to anchor. The currents in the Hudson are erratic and strong, but the mooring field was full and it was late.

We'd done everything we could, set in the hook well, and the boat was sitting well on the line. We just wanted to wait a bit and watch when the tide changed and make sure everything would be OK.

When the tides turned, it seemed like total chaos. Boats that had been sitting in a line at a very comfortable distance began to turn and swing in every direction. They looked alarmingly close to us now. One owner ended up resetting his anchor 3 times, and his boat was still threatening the big Bermuda-based boat beside him. Our anchor did will, we swung about a lot, too, and we also had our anchor chain rubbing against the bobstay. Not a great thing, so we were on high alert for the next 4 hours. Missed shore leave our first night in. But, eventually, they did settle down and life went on as before.

A few days ago, I was feeling like the tide had turned on me in my personal life. Alyssa's injury and subsequent rules about her toe _no running, no sandpits, no swimming, don't get it wet, etc.... We also were having trouble with our computer and internet access. Then, to top it off, part of of dodger got caught in a gust of wind and i watched them blow off the boat and slowly, OH so slowly, slide silently beneath the dark water. Expensive to replace! We also haven't rented the house and finances aren't going as we anticipated or need. Money is more of a concern that I'd dike it to be.

Isn't there a quote from a moved, something like:"You are entering the time when all things will turn against you (Star Wars, maybe)?
Yea, it was feeling kind of like that.

But underneath it all, I have the faith that just as the water around our boat will change, our personal tides will change as well. It won't change the course of events that have happened, of course, but it just might bring some good things to us, or at least, bring the strength of mind to allow me to deal with it all withoug feeling overwhelmed!

Yesterday, we had an amazing day scootering down the waterway. We came by the museum for the aircraft carrier Intrepid and the sum Growler. The girls got to go into both of them.l When they came out, their faces were full of joy as they told me all about it. Smiles were big and given wholeheartedly.

maybe my tides are turning! I can wait.
