The gift of time

As we get closer to home, people are starting to ask what the best and worst part of the trip has been.

Updates

The last 3 blogs were posted after the fact as the sailblogs website was down. I posted them on facebook and was just able to repost here. I also downloaded some photos on facebook which I will copy here when I am able. If you'd like to see the photos on facebook, just search for jamey myron. They're on my site in photos/albums. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read about our adventures and keep in touch with us. It's good to have a touchstone when drifting around!

An Uneventful Day

No big stories today. No water in the boat, lost ground tackle or storms. The boat stayed clean, the kids got along and the weather was beautiful. Not much to write about, but it was amazing to experience. It was perfection. I'm not sure if it's because of or in spite of our recent adventures, but we [...]

It takes about 20 seconds

We left Norfolk early this morning in beautiful weather. The seas were flat, winds were calm and almost no traffic in the harbor (which is rare in itself). Things were so calm that Bob had let me sleep. He got up around 6 to get us going. Just outside the harbor, he passed across the channel to head [...]

Georgetown, SC

We arrived in Georgetown SC today around lunchtime. The scenery here along Winyah Bay is stunning, though we haven’t adjusted to the water color in the states yet. It seems so murky compared to the Bahamas and Caribbean.

Getting older

Now that we are back in the US, one of the girls' favorite thing to do is call and talk to friends. Being away from friends has been one of the hardest part of this trip for them.

Back in the US, Back in the US, Back in the USA

Jamey
We are sitting on a dock in Florida trying to readjust to being back in the US. We haven’t been somewhere with so many stores, people, buildings and varied weather in many months. It’s a bit overwhelming. We did go a bit crazy, though, buying things that haven’t been available for a while.
Our crossing was wonderful! We left Cabbage Cay in the Berry Islands on Thursday afternoon. We had to beat north for a little while, but once we turned westerly, it was a dream sail. We had great winds until Friday mid-morning, then it went flat. The whole ocean looked like a pond. We broke down and motored as we wanted to arrive and get safe in Florida before all the Thunderstorms started. The motoring went on for most of the day, but my Friday early afternoon, we had nice winds again and made great time.
We made such great time that we arrived at the Ft. Pierce inlet at 3am instead of the expected 5 or 6am. Arriving early was great, but it’s dark at 3am. We decided to go ahead and enter at night. We had pretty good moonlight, good charts and the weather was mild. We figured if we at anytime were uncomfortable, we would set the hook just outside of the canal for a few hours until we got some light.
Entering went very well, everything was marked as well as a road. When we got to the Ft Pierce North bridge, though, we couldn’t raise the bridge keeper, so we finally set the anchor at 3am to get a few hours sleep.
Friday seemed like we were being punished. We were all so tired and still had further to go. It was very hot and muggy, no wind (more motoring). We hoisted the anchor, swatting at a few bugs. The keeper raised the bridge (we had been hailing him on a wrong channel the previous night) and just as we were about to go through the opening, something happened with the transmission and we had not power. Bob went below to take a look and try to fix it. I was just about to call the bridge keeper and tell him to abort the opening, but noticed that the current was pushing us right under the bridge. I stayed above, trying to keep us in the channel and off the bridge while Bob worked below. Luckily the current pushed us right where we needed to go, but it took forever getting past the bridge. I’m sure there were a lot of people late for work that morning, complaining about the slow green sailboat!!
Bob got us working again, and off we went. Not 5 minutes later, the few bugs we had been swatting at were a swarm. There was some kind of hatch and there were (no exaggeration) thousands of bugs swarming on our boat. The girls and I worked for over an hour, killing as quickly as we can and barely made a dent. Our boat was covered in dead bugs. Luckily, they weren’t biting bugs!
When the bug fiasco was a bit under controlled, we headed in to the dock. We had met some amazing people in the Bahamas that offered us use of their dock in Florida. We arrived around 9 or 10am, very tired, very hot and very buggy.
Just as I was feeling really sorry for myself, 4 manatees came up to the dock. They were so close we could have touched them and they were amazing. One was a baby, riding right next to its mom. This was the first time any of us had seen a manatee.
We are a bit rested, fed, and headed off to see my mom and then our next adventure on the trip: Disney World!!! The kids are thrilled!
