Happily Landscaping

Just when I thought we were at the end of our landscaping for a bit while Bob is fishing, the wind picked up (too brisk for fishing) and we started more planting and rearranging of other plants.

We planted 9 blueberry bushes, about 4 types along one side of our back yard. Apparently when planting blueberries one needs to have more than one species so that they pollinate properly. We also planted about 5 raspberry bushes, 2 types in the same area however you don’t need to have more than one species we just chose to have 2 types.

In mid May we planted some herbs, rhubarb and an apple tree that has 5 different types of apples. Five branches = five species of apples, they have been grafted. We also have a cherry tree that we planted 2 years ago and yes it does have cherries on it.

Our front yard was looking pretty boring so we decided we needed to make it look more attractive so we bit the bullet and did what we thought would look nice. We made an extension to the garden we already had in the front a fair amount. It took a lot of work to do this since we had to remove the grass that was there, dig up large rocks, build up the area with good top soil, buy some new plants and trees to fill the area and finally complete it with some beautiful salt and pepper gravel. We also relocated a few plants from the back yard to the front and some bushes from the side of the house to this area. We chose to make our garden with perennial plants that will keep year round, year after year. We managed to get some great deals on the 3 birch trees and maple tree from the Superstore and others we paid full price. We find that it is very expensive to make purchases from the landscaping and gardening establishments and we feel confident that we planted the items properly by using good top soil, bone meal and plant food. We did the same for our fruit trees and bushes so we will keep our fingers crossed. It took us 3 long full days to complete the front. Bob says, “No more work for the rest of the summer, fishing only!”

Unfortunately it rained today so Bob worked on the whaler doing a few touch ups and hook ups. More rain for tomorrow so I will see what I can get him accomplish inside.
