Itea
11 November 2011 | Gulf of Corinth
Dean
Great day on the water. Flat seas, blue skies, tall mountains and no freighter traffic. Sacrificing chickens at the bow to the gods works! Made for Itea, a small town on the north coast of the Gulf of Corinth, where bus connections to Athens and Delphi can be made. And given the winds for the next few days this may prove to be a good move.
The Gulf of Corinth is entered by passing under the architecturally beautiful Rion bridge where one contacts the Rion Traffic Controller on VHF Ch. 14 to receive directions on which span to pass under. One must also watch for the seemingly redundant ferry boats passing alongside the bridge (why not just take the bridge?).
Made good time on the 38 mile journey however darkness began to fall as we headed past the numerous small islets situated on the approaches to Itea Marina. The full moon rose over the mountains and helped to illuminate our way to a vacant berth. Had time to do a short tour of the town before retiring.
Next morning after some initial difficulties the Port Police office was eventually found where my cruising papers were signed and stamped. And the six Euro per day fee was collected. Good value but no facilities, water or electricity.
