Fig Tree Bay

29 May 2012 | Cyprus, east coast
Dean
Just south of the Ghost city of Famagusta is the wonderful east coast of Cyprus. Fig Tree Bay is only a short distance from the armed 'Green Line' separating the Turkish controlled northern section of the island (about 37%) from the south Greek Cypriots.
We are anchored off this recently developed holiday resort area of Cyprus. Some offending north winds arrived with some big waves keeping Tom and I up through the night on anchor watch. We reset in the morning a bit farther out setting both bowers.
Managed to finally connect with Antonis, father of Peter Zembashi who lives back home. Tony has been helping us with marinas and advice along the way. We met Myroula, his lovely wife, two her brothers and his other son John.
For a human face to the Cypriot-Turk issue one needs to look no farther than this family. Their original home is on the edge of the Green Line only meters away from the fateful shootings of 1996. In 1974 the Zembashi's had to flee and begin life anew. Tony took us to a lookout point to show us his original home and the no man's land along the Green Line near Famagusta.
We spent the day touring the sites along the coast and getting to know our new friend
