Arrival At Necessity

03 April 2013 | Marmaris Turkey
Brian Hall
Saturday March 30 & Sunday March 31, 2013
After a late arrival at the Hotel Caricki in Aktas (where we stayed last fall) not far from Marmaris Yacht Marine we slept in a bit before dragging ourselves down for the great Turkish breakfast. It started with olives, cucumber, tomatoes, cheese (2 kinds) and some mystery meat. This was followed by an omelet and great coffee. We stood out for the bus but got picked up by a Turkish lady heading for the Marina. We arrived to find Necessity moved from where we left her sitting between two 75' powerboats instead if the two 150' sailboats on either side when we left. Getting on board all looked fine but on opening the companionway, I could hear a faint alarm - the high water bilge alarm. Strange, considering the boat is in a cradle on land! Checking the bilge I discovered it to be a swimming pool (maybe 50 gallons) but still below the floorboards and the batteries down to 9 volts. We believe that the Sahara dust in the heavier than usual rains clogged the cockpit drains filling the cockpit with rainwater till it overflowed into the boat and collected in the bilge. After pumping the bilge we started putting another coat of bottom paint on top of the 2 done last fall and readied her for the impending launch. We knocked off about 6 and after showering we ate in the only open restaurant which was passable and headed for bed.
Sunday we slept in then took the bus back and finished up a few jobs to get ready for launch. Rene cleaned the boat inside while I puttered about. We returned a bit earlier and had dinner in the hotel - lentil soup, and chicken curry with bulgar wheat. After dinner we skyped back home and wished everyone happy Easter.
