Dean, on board Necessity
300 miles across the Ionian Sea with half of it under sail. SMG for the sailing portion was 5.5 knots with a nice north wind on our beam. Lorraine holds the new record for time spent on the helm, all of it with a big grin!
Necessity was our home for five days. Joe & Lorraine boarded at Navplion in Greece and got off 120 hours later in Licata, Sicily with a brief shore leave in Ithaca while we refueled. Our weather window was near perfect. The freighter traffic was light. The dinners coming up from the gallery we beyond tasty. Eggplant Parmesan, Gemista, stuffed pork loin, Greek salad, Food usually tastes better at sea but the meals on board Necessity would have suited a cruise ship.
For those of us who do long distance cruising there a number of qualities required in crew members. Physically fit, seamanship abilities, endurance, perseverance and good humour. And without the last one the first four don’t count! Joe, Lorraine, Les, and Olga have positive attitudes in abundance.
The total trip was 360 miles. SMG was 5.0 knots. Very happy to be safely tied to the dock on the south shore of Sicily.
