Launch of Necessity

05 April 2014
Brian Hall
Saturday March 29, 2014
As the yard closed at noon, we had to be up much too early to get going. Brian made dockage arrangements while the others stopped at a marina café for an “Italian” breakfast including a chocolate pastry which was voted as exceptional. Then, off to meet Giuseppe who has been babysitting Necessity in his yard over the winter. After a few minor preparations she was hauled to the edge of the water where a 70 ton crane awaited. After the requisite yelling in Italian, Necessity hit the water just before noon. Stewart provided the video evidence and Brian ran around like an expectant father worrying as they removed the 3 shrouds holding the mast from the back. In spite of the concerns, she floated once again and the adventure begins. Angela, Rene and Brian motored over to the slip while Stewart brought the car around. Docking was accomplished with little fanfare as there was little wind and lots of crew. Launch complete, the crew headed off to lunch at La Fiabe, the restaurant who had helped us with the phone the night before. The waiter, remembering Brian, even offered a taste of a farfalle pasta dish with salmon which was exquisite. Back at Necessity, Stewart and Angela set off to explore while Brian & Rene did some assembly. Brian started outside cleaning and Rene tackled the interior. The Marina de Cala de Sole is well appointed and has lots of live-aboards from all over Europe and a few from North America. Angela and Stewart returned and were dispatched for groceries while the cleaning was finished. It was agreed that Stew and Ange would sleep aboard. After some snacks at the apartment Brian led the newlyweds to their new digs.
