Well, I am back and I'm not sure if I'm sorry that I missed all the excitement. What I do know it that I am very glad that Barb, Peri and Nelleke are all right and in addition that we didn't know what was going on until it was all over. I know that had she known Barb would have been more frightened that she needed to be and if I had known I would have been frantic. As it was she thought that there was merely some annoying high winds that she needed to deal with using more dock lines and fenders, slashing rain, and thunder and lightening and I was more irritated with not being able to be there to help. Once it was over it became very easy to second guess everything. I have spoken to a couple of people who have had close encounters with tornados and the common theme is that it is coming over you you have less than a minute to do whatever you are going to do. This of course means that realistically all you can do is get under, behind, against something that you pray is solid and duck. In town as Barb has said it is amazing that everything is quite normal up to the start of the swath at which point there is almost total devastation. One of the curches in town looks like God took his thumb to it and just squashed the middle of it - see the photo with today's post. Fortunately it was empty. Just up the street the Catholic church was having its annual spaghetti dinner and had 450 people in it. Most of the homes that were destroyed were empty because the residents were dining out. Big surprise to come home to an empty lot, eh? There are a few more photos in the 2011 Summer Cruise album in the gallery.
I am spending the day recovering from the whirlwind (pun intended) trip home, only doing small jobs. Peri was really glad to see me. I keep forgetting that when Barb or I leave he has no way of knowing what is going on or whether he will ever see us again.
