• RNSYS - up on the hard
by Barb - stinking hot temp today, hurrah!
I am sitting on board Nelleke, up on the hard after a busy day. Mike is off to the Marblehead volunteer dinner so I thought I'd avoid paying some bills by writing an entry - it has been a while for me for sure.
It was good to get away from the house in Shelburne as I was working myself into a frazzle trying to get as much unpacked as possible before my arthroscopic surgery this Thursday. We spent June 30th and July 1st ripping out carpets and cleaning - the house had been unoccupied , except for the spiders, for quite some time. There is a mound of carpet, underlay and linoleum in the backyard that is about waist high. Munden's Movers (GREAT COMPANY!!) met us at the storage units on July 4th and filled their truck for delivery the next day - there was an amazing volume of "stuff" jammed into the two units - one was 10X7 and the other was 10X14. I was more than a little fried to find three huge boxes of books that suffered irreparable water damage in the 10X14 unit. Other boxes were damp along the back wall but the movers were able to carefully pick them up - could have been ugly as they contained china and crystal - I have called the storage company to see if there is anything that can be done about our loss - our insurance had a $1000 deductible - the books were costly but not that much.
SO - the boxes and furniture are in and I have been unpacking while Mike has been working on the dining room floor - it looks great and the smell of the oil on the floor is lovely.
We had a bad moment with the kitchen appliances - the day of the delivery Future Shop called and said that they had an equipment failure in their warehouse and could not get at the appliances we paid for. Moreover the delivery guy sad he had no idea of when he would be coming down our way next at all after the equipment was functional - swell, eh? While I was steaming about that Mike sauntered across Water Street to Shelburne Furniture to see what they had - fast forward a few hours... I called Future Shop and told them politely what they could do with their appliances, had my money refunded and went over to the local store and bought everything - equal quality for LESS money and will be serviced by the same store - lesson one in why you should buy locally.
A couple of nights ago we spent a lovely evening with the chaps that live two doors away - Ian is very knowledgeable about the history of the local houses and the architecture, he showed us through his house that has pieces of it dating to the 1700's - we were treated to a few pieces that he played on his magnificent grand piano (drool...), and evening of interesting conversation with new neighbours - great way to start our town-life.
I'll be taking a stab at working up some kitchen plans while I am laid up with my knee - Mike and I have roughed out what we think we would like so I just have to put those ideas into the design package we bought.
This restoration/renovation will be an interesting challenge and a counterpoint to sailing life - we will have the best of both worlds.
