...... and the rain is pouring down. It could be worse, I suppose. We hear that NYC and NJ got pasted with a foot and a half of snow with some storm attributed loss of life. It is wet and miserable but at least we don't have to shovel it.
The other day we had a furnace maintenance team in to clean and tune our furnace, something that, truth be told, we should have gotten done during the summer, but which with everything else going on we had procrastinated about. So I suppose that since everything else had been going so well I shouldn’t be surprised that it turns out that the combustion chamber in the old furnace had holes in it large enough to put your fist through. Good thing that we caught it before we actually started pushing the heat through it as we would have been breathing in a lot of nasty soot. We did hit one thing very lucky in that the furnace repair fellow happened to have a used furnace of exactly the same model in his yard. What would the odds of that be? As a result we got a new to us furnace, installed, for $500. We have been really luck since we came here. So much so that when there is a potential disaster something always has cropped up to get us out of a fix. It works very well indeed and we were able to entertain our friends off Moonlight Maid without asking them to shiver themselves to sleep at night. As it stands now the propane fireplace running at low makes the house cozy during the day and when we shut it off to come to bed the furnace will cut in at 15 degrees centigrade during the night while we are in bed.
While Alan and Heather were here we had one really great sunny day on Saturday when we drove down and around the Liverpool area to check out the auction at Beach Meadows. We had a couple of left bids but since we didn’t get any calls I guess that means that we weren’t successful with any of them. I rather guessed as the auctioneer was the fellow handing the left bids which basically meant that he would say I have a bid of $X on this item who will give me more? So we never really have a shot. Great for the person selling the items, but makes it pointless to leave left bids. Maybe that’s their goal. Still, we had a great tour of the countryside and rediscovered a small place called Mill Village on the banks of the Medway River with a wonderful café in the back of the General Store. We almost bought a place there 30 years ago and had kind of forgotten about it since, so it was pleasant to catch up with it.
Ian and Robin came over to make a six-some for dinner and I made my low-down-dirty cheater pasta sauce to have with smoked salmon and cheese plate for a starter. If I do say so myself we did a pretty good job especially when you add onto it Barb’s apple crisp with a rum flavoured whipped cream topping. Slurp!
Today we are heading out to yet another concert. This time with a Renaissance theme with musicians, singers, dancers, the whole shooting match. That is life in Shelburne – one long and pleasant social function, a brief pause, followed by another one.
