Aw crap! Not again!
Friday 1 November 2019
It's the first of the month and All Hallows' Eve had something exciting and no small amount frightening for us last night. Check out the picture accompanying this post. That's what woke me up at 0030 this morning.
Barb and I had a mad scramble to stow away any loose gear on deck and add more lines from the boat to shore. Then there was nothing to do but hope the other guys around us have tied their boats off well too and pray this thing passes by without hurting anyone.
We called Estelle to make sure that she understood what the Emergency Alert meant and what action she should take then we couldn't do much but sit, have a cuppa tea, and wait it out.
At 0115 we heard a Coast Guard PAN PAN notification that one of the US warships had broken loose a stern line and had impacted a second ship next to them. We think this was in the Norfolk Naval Base which is about 15 miles from here.
By 0120 it seemed to be over but until then we had gusts of up to 40 kts. I am really glad to not be on an anchor and worrying about it holding tonight.
We are very sensitive to these things ever since the time that Barb was alone in Deltaville when a tornado came through. We were very lucky then and it seems we have been lucky this time.
I will post this now I'm case anyone is watching the news and has questions.
