Sail to Vis Island

We had a nice 4 hour sail from Jerolim to the town of Vis on Vis Island. Vis Island has been a defensive base for various governments for many years. The British built Fort George III between 1812 and 1813 to keep Napoleon from taking the Adriatic. They had a 200 year anniversary celebration the night we stayed there with important people from both Croatia and England. The island is also well noted for its wine. It really didn’t open for tourists until 1998 because of its military installations which have all been closed.
We arranged a driving tour of the island for Saturday morning. The guide took us to the highest elevation on the island for a good panoramic view. The military still has an installation at the summit where they can see ships coming in and out of the Adriatic. We stopped in Komiza on the western side of the island for coffee. We visited the cave where General Tito ran his operations from June thru October 1944. There are also remains of a submarine base with a concrete lined cave used for restocking the subs.
