Day Twenty (d)one

Day 21 Monday October, 24 We push away from the dock on what is supposed to be our last day of the trip at 9:00. It has rained overnight, but appears it will be yet another delightful day for us. (I'm not really fan of the word delightful, but I've grown tired of writing beautiful and perfect and [...]

Day 20 Final Stop

Day 20 Sunday October 23 Up early, because it's what we do now, but instead of leaving in the dark, we have a delicious and relaxing breakfast aboard the boat while we await the tide. After cleaning up, we're underway at 9:45.

Day 18 Part Two

Day 18 (continued) Saturday, October 22 .....Only serves to make us stronger. The second sunrise of our Day 18 looks a lot like the sunset did. As the sun is rising we get word from the Coast Guard that Tow Boat US has dispatched two boats and that they should get to us around 8:00. At 8:30 they arrive. After [...]

Crossing the Gulf?

Day 18 Friday, October 21 We're up before the sun again and we follow a barge out the channel to the Gulf. By the time we actually enter the Gulf, the sun is rising. We get to the open water and pick up the pace.

Day 17 Leaving the River System

Day 17 Thursday October 20 We're up and ready to leave by 5:00, but again commercial traffic at our first lock keeps us at the dock. It's cold, 36 degrees, and foggy. So foggy you can't see the opposite shore. You can barely see the bow from the stern. But if you look up, there are stars everywhere. [...]

Bobby's Fish Camp

Day 16 Wednesday, October 19 Up at 5:00 and talking with the Lockmaster at Columbus Lock. He's got an upbound tug in the lock, so our 5:30 gets pushed out a little. After a relaxing cup of coffee we push away from the dock at 5:45 and head for our first dark lock in.

Day 6

Chris/ Clear and warm (again)
Day 6 Sunday October 9th. Up with the sun again. In Betsie Bay the wind seems down, but no telling what the lake is like. Thinking about yesterday, George Kastanza comes to mind, ‘The sea was angry that day my friends’. We clear the piers at 8:00 and Lake Michigan is no longer mad. Some small left over rollers, but we’re able to do 22 Knots.

By noon Lake Michigan might as well be a swimming pool. It’s like glass and we’re doing 26 Knots or better. It’s hazy and visibility is only about 5 miles. For hours we see nothing but a couple ghost ships on the horizon. We can’t believe six days on the Great Lakes in October, and only one was even remotely rough, and even that one was sunny and warm. It could not have gone any better, one could not even pray for better.

Chicago’s skyline comes into view about 3:00. What an awesome sight. As we get closer, there’s lots of boating going on. We’re followed into the marina by a boat every bit as big as we are (Plane to Sea). Inside there are plenty more. We fuel up while a boat bigger than us waits to get to the pumps. Today we take 876 gallons. And the other guy’s wait is long.

The marina is right in front of Soldier Field, but the Bears are not in town. We’re steps away from the Chicago Marathon starting and finishing locations. Unfortunately we missed it by a couple hours, other than some stragglers.

We get docked, settled in, and logged in. The wireless LAN gives me the opportunity to upload photos. I also get a chance to give Dan Stolze a call. I’ll be having dinner at his home tomorrow, Monday, and am looking forward to seeing him and the girls.

We end the day with dinner at Pizanno’s, just off Michigan Ave. The town is hoppin, on a Sunday evening. Maybe it’s because of the marathon. It certainly differs from Toledo Beach, Harbor Beach, and Frankfort. Need to visit here more often.
