Day Twenty (d)one

Day 21 Monday October, 24 We push away from the dock on what is supposed to be our last day of the trip at 9:00. It has rained overnight, but appears it will be yet another delightful day for us. (I'm not really fan of the word delightful, but I've grown tired of writing beautiful and perfect and [...]

Day 20 Final Stop

Day 20 Sunday October 23 Up early, because it's what we do now, but instead of leaving in the dark, we have a delicious and relaxing breakfast aboard the boat while we await the tide. After cleaning up, we're underway at 9:45.

Day 18 Part Two

Day 18 (continued) Saturday, October 22 .....Only serves to make us stronger. The second sunrise of our Day 18 looks a lot like the sunset did. As the sun is rising we get word from the Coast Guard that Tow Boat US has dispatched two boats and that they should get to us around 8:00. At 8:30 they arrive. After [...]

Crossing the Gulf?

Day 18 Friday, October 21 We're up before the sun again and we follow a barge out the channel to the Gulf. By the time we actually enter the Gulf, the sun is rising. We get to the open water and pick up the pace.

Day 17 Leaving the River System

Day 17 Thursday October 20 We're up and ready to leave by 5:00, but again commercial traffic at our first lock keeps us at the dock. It's cold, 36 degrees, and foggy. So foggy you can't see the opposite shore. You can barely see the bow from the stern. But if you look up, there are stars everywhere. [...]

Bobby's Fish Camp

Day 16 Wednesday, October 19 Up at 5:00 and talking with the Lockmaster at Columbus Lock. He's got an upbound tug in the lock, so our 5:30 gets pushed out a little. After a relaxing cup of coffee we push away from the dock at 5:45 and head for our first dark lock in.

Day 11 Still on The Illinois

14 October 2011 | Grafton
Chris/ and more of the same
Day 11 Friday, October 14. We leave Holiday Harbor 7:05 and continue our trip down the Illinois River. We’ve now picked up JC, who is a licensed captain that has done the Mississippi, Ohio, Tenn-Tom trip a couple times before.

We have to go through a few more locks today and we are hoping to get 90 miles to Beardstown. We go by Peoria with the moon still high in the sky on another beautiful, sunny day. There’s plenty more of the same scenery we had yesterday, with the addition of so more eagles and some bulls. The fact that we are in a flood plain is made clear by the number of houses built on stilts. Some are built on other methods of elevation that look far less reliable, think Jenga.

We are making such good time we blow right by Beardstown and head to Saturday’s destination. We arrive at Grafton, IL around 6:00 in a stiff breeze. We’ve covered 188 miles in a day. Seems easy enough, but it all depends on your luck at that locks, how many barges you go by, and how many ‘Bubbas’ you pass.

As we go by barges in tow, we have to slow to idle. Same thing if you go by any with work (loading or unloading) going on at the docks. Same thing as you go by floating docks in front of homes. And the same is true if you go by guys fishing on boats (and there are a lot) or hunting in their duck blinds; these are bubbas’!

We get to the fuel dock to find out the bar at the marina serves free wings until 7:00. 542 gallons and a pump out later, we’re ready to grab some. We also decide to have dinner right there. Grafton is right where the Illinois River meets the Mississippi. We’re in Illinois, but the other side of the river is Missouri. The bar is full of people watching the NLCS.

A walk through town gives you an idea of why they claim to be ‘the Key West of the Midwest’, nothing but bars. Although, most of the bars are actually wineries, which is interesting, as there are no vineyards anywhere in sight.

The interesting thing about the Grafton Harbor is that the entire marina is floating. The break wall, all the docks, the building (which house a gift shop, bar and restaurant, the office, a laundry, and showers); all floating. The other interesting thing about the marina is their swimming pool. It is in the docks and floats as well. This time of year it’s empty, and floats above the docks.

We’ve now shaved a day off the trip, although we could lose it elsewhere. We get to sleep in tomorrow if we want, as we have a short day of only 45 some miles. Then on Sunday we’ll have to cover 250 miles. That one will require us doing watches.
