Day Twenty (d)one

Day 21 Monday October, 24 We push away from the dock on what is supposed to be our last day of the trip at 9:00. It has rained overnight, but appears it will be yet another delightful day for us. (I'm not really fan of the word delightful, but I've grown tired of writing beautiful and perfect and [...]

Day 20 Final Stop

Day 20 Sunday October 23 Up early, because it's what we do now, but instead of leaving in the dark, we have a delicious and relaxing breakfast aboard the boat while we await the tide. After cleaning up, we're underway at 9:45.

Day 18 Part Two

Day 18 (continued) Saturday, October 22 .....Only serves to make us stronger. The second sunrise of our Day 18 looks a lot like the sunset did. As the sun is rising we get word from the Coast Guard that Tow Boat US has dispatched two boats and that they should get to us around 8:00. At 8:30 they arrive. After [...]

Crossing the Gulf?

Day 18 Friday, October 21 We're up before the sun again and we follow a barge out the channel to the Gulf. By the time we actually enter the Gulf, the sun is rising. We get to the open water and pick up the pace.

Day 17 Leaving the River System

Day 17 Thursday October 20 We're up and ready to leave by 5:00, but again commercial traffic at our first lock keeps us at the dock. It's cold, 36 degrees, and foggy. So foggy you can't see the opposite shore. You can barely see the bow from the stern. But if you look up, there are stars everywhere. [...]

Bobby's Fish Camp

Day 16 Wednesday, October 19 Up at 5:00 and talking with the Lockmaster at Columbus Lock. He's got an upbound tug in the lock, so our 5:30 gets pushed out a little. After a relaxing cup of coffee we push away from the dock at 5:45 and head for our first dark lock in.

The Mississippi

Chris/warm, Clear, Moonlit
Day 12 Saturday October 15, 2011 We leave 'Key West' just before 9:00. It's yet another beautiful sunny day, and we're on the Mississippi. Finally we see riverboats in the river, as opposed to on 'the hard'. I feel like Huck Finn to Bud's Tom Sawyer.

The shoreline is really cool to see. Sandy looking cliffs of (presumably limestone), cut out by wind and water that make the bluffs on Lake Ontario look small. Add the fact that the trees are turning, and you have spectacular viewing. Curious though, that the trees on the islands have not starting turning the way they have on the shorelines.

A couple of locks and a canal later, we get to St. Louis. The approach is not too appealing, although the construction of a new highway and bridge over the Mississippi is interesting to see. We get by the industry and bridges to the north of the city and get a clearer view of the skyline.

The Gateway Arch is awesome. It is sooo much bigger than I ever imagined. The observatory windows are barely visible from earth. It is really cool to see, and stands right on the edge of the mighty Mississippi.

There are barges everywhere. Anchored five by five. Being pushed five by five. Sitting on the shorelines. Its unbelievable how many there are, and how anybody knows where they are. It reminds me of containers that are stacked everywhere at the terminals in Newark, New York and Philly.

We get to Hobbie's at 2:30. It's nothing more than a series of old barges tied together floating on the west side of the river, a few miles south of St. Louis. But they have diesel, water, and 50 amp power here. We top off the fuel tanks with 123 gallons.

This is where we'll spend the night. We're not alone. There is an 80 foot Lazzara, La Dolce Vita, and a 50 foot Sea Ray, both of whom were in Grafton with us last night, among many others. The Sea Ray has been with us a few days now. One of the other boats here spent most of the summer on the Erie Canal. He was on Seneca Lake when Irene came through. That put him west of the damaged locks and sealed his fate. He had to keep going west, and take the rout we're taking south.

This is the last stop before the long trip up the Ohio River, to the Tennessee River, to the Cumberland By-Pass, and then Barkley Lake, and a 4:00 am departure for Green Turtle Bay tomorrow.
