Suwarrow is Gilligan's Island

Or actually it was Tom Neal's island, the hermit who lived here for 40 years and welcomed cruisers through generations. It is a national park, only one warden is here half the year, and completely unpopulated. Tom founded the Suwarrow yacht club, a place for cruisers to hang out, and generally looked after the island. The waters are crystal clear and beaches unspoiled. The harbour is full of black tip sharks which are friendly but it is unnerving to see 15 of them around the boat at all times! The reef snorkelling was fabulous, we didn't see any of the false killer wales to swim with as it was too early in the season. We walked the white sand beaches and did our part by collecting plastic from the beach on our way out. A very peaceful and pristine place in the world indeed, well worth the two day stopover!
