Ghosting along the top of the Dominican Republic
14 May 2015 | North Atlantic Ocean
Russ and Laurie
We decided to stay inside of the reefs and cross the top side of the Dominican Republic, giving up some speed, but giving everyone a smooth ride and good night sleep. The wind has gone lighter so we've slowed to 6-7kts but making good progress and enjoying a very pleasant ride. We enjoyed the lightening in the distance north of us, where our weather router said we would find more wind but we would see 30-40kt squalls that go with it. He's eerily good. We plan to sail under the Turks and Caicos islands then turn north somewhere before San Salvador and head for Hatteras, weather permitting. We are told there is virtually no chance of tropical development during the rest of May, so we think chances are good at this point. We have 1430nm to go and all is well.
