Taking a breather ...

Since we'll be off the boat during July and August, we plan to post only three times per week. The Captain will continue writing a practical Blue View post each week, we'll keep you up to date on what's happening with us and then throw in some cruising nuggets as well.

Keeping fit

We’ve written before about keeping fit on the boat. David is so much better at a regimented exercise program than I am. I have all the best intentions, but I can always think of something better to do than sit-ups, push-ups, leg lifts and running in place. It doesn’t take much to distract me. Walking, [...]

Happy 240th Birthday, America

Growing up in New England, I took for granted just how lovely a summer’s morning can be in Massachusetts. It’s comfortably cool and everything smells clean and fresh. Spider webs glisten with morning dew and it’s just great to be alive and breathe in the new day. Being back at Lin’s house conjures up wonderful childhood memories of summer mornings past. And this is not just any morning … it’s the 4th of July, the best holiday of the summertime in the USA.

Leaving Cups and a Road Trip

Leaving Nine of Cups is never easy. We know she’ll pout while we’re gone and so we do our best to make sure she’s as comfortable as possible before we leave. We were whirling dervishes trying to get everything ready.

Hunting & Gathering - Virginia Beach

We had lots to do before leaving Cups. David was intent on getting as many chores done in advance of our departure as possible so that once we return in September, we can spend time sailing in the Chesapeake rather than doing repairs and maintenance. Much of what we needed in the way of parts and supplies, [...]

TeTautua Village

21 August 2009 | Cook Islands
Marcie
After a rocky, windy night in the anchorage, we opted to motor the 7 miles across the coral-studded lagoon to the anchorage off TeTautua village. We left mid-day and the "bommies" are very easy to spot, so navigation around the corals was not a problem at all though we still kept a bow watch.

Dinner at Pa's last night was interesting. He served fried parrot fish, fried breadfruit and a green which we didn't recognize by sight, flavor or name (something like Swiss chard and it tasted good). We contributed a potato salad and brownies for dessert which were a big hit. We stopped by Ru's earlier in the day and David was able to fix a multi-meter and a drill for him. He reciprocated by giving us a pumpkin and a pair of shell earrings.

Arrival in TeTautua was no different than in Omoka. We barely had the anchor down and an aluminum skiff was racing towards us ready to trade. We wanted to regroup and figure out a better trading strategy and suggested the next morning would be better, but they were not to be dissuaded. "Do you have sun glasses? Do you have towels? sheets? bungy cord? fish hooks? sewing thread? mixing bowls? Dremel tools? drill bits? " The questions went on and on. It's like a scavenger hunt on the boat figuring out if you have what they're asking for, if you want to part with it and then figuring out where in the heck it might be because if you're willing to part with it and you don't use it, it's probably stowed away somewhere. So now everything is dug out, laying in the cockpit or on the saloon floor and they dig out some polished shells and a couple of natural pearls and say..."okay, fair trade?". We say, "NO!!!" (but in a nice way, of course). They dig out one more pearl and one more shell. "Now, okay? Do you have any perfume?" Eventually they wear you down and you say "Okay" and hope they'll leave soon. But, of course, they say "Do you have any ....?" It's like a game of Go Fish says our neighbors.
