Taking a breather ...

Happy 240th Birthday, America
Growing up in New England, I took for granted just how lovely a summer’s morning can be in Massachusetts. It’s comfortably cool and everything smells clean and fresh. Spider webs glisten with morning dew and it’s just great to be alive and breathe in the new day. Being back at Lin’s house conjures up wonderful childhood memories of summer mornings past. And this is not just any morning … it’s the 4th of July, the best holiday of the summertime in the USA.

Can't escape the weather!
The weather prediction today? Northerlies tomorrow turning to strong easterlies, followed by westerlies, then southerlies over the next couple of days. Not too uncommon here for the wind to clock as the fronts pass, but it's hard to find an all around anchorage. We decided to move inside Houhora Harbour. There's a narrow little channel that averages about 20-25' depths which surrounds a shallow lagoon. We went all the way to the end, but could find no good place to anchor. There are so many local moorings in place that anchoring would have put us either on top of one of the moored boats (if they showed up) or in the middle of the channel. So we wended our way back out and settled in the lee of a tiny island just inside the entrance which seems to be fine. We're in fairly shallow water (probably 8-9' at low tide and we draw 7'), but we think we'll be well-proctected from the blow coming from the north and east and the bottom is sand.
