Ice Galore
February 22, 2010
There is ice everywhere. We are surrounded by icebergs, bergy bits and growlers. One
tabular iceberg ahead has no end in site. It is one of the largest I have seen for a long
time.
Last night, we were forced to heave to due to the ice. With large breaking seas and
ferocious snow squalls, we were all happy to not be on watch outside. This morning was a
different story when at first light, we began to sail again. Snow squalls and confused seas
were our welcome on to watch duty.
Now it is gloriously sunny. The swell and wind have moderated and the view of the myriad
floating bits of ice is stunning. Even so, we hope to be through the worst before dark.
The first safe anchorage in South Georgia is only 80 miles away. Eleshul. It is protected
from all winds but north. The weather forecast is for gale force easterlies, starting
tomorrow afternoon and our hope is that we will be snuggly anchored in harbour before it
hits.
Life aboard has been melancholic. Hayley and Beth Anne are quite affected by the motion.
This time though they have taken sea sick medication which is helping a lot. Beth Anne came
prepared and has stashes of food right next to her bunk. Everytime I go past, she is
nibbling on something. Magnus and I are holding out on medication. Brian seems to not
suffer at all. Some people have all the luck!
All of us are looking forward to landfall in South Georgia. Soon!
