Northern Florida
18 April 2016
Sunday, April 3rd - we left Titusville with a stiff north wind on the nose the entire way. We began with a perfectly clean boat and finished the day completely salt covered. The plan was to stop at the free docks in New Smyrna, but voth were full so we continued on to Daytona, docking at Halifax Harbour. It's a bit pricey but we were able to wash the salt off!
Next stop would be Palm Coast and they had an unserviced dock available for us at $20 a night. When we arrived, we almost got to the slip before going aground! There is less than 5 feet of water, so we ended up having to move to a regular slip - at more than $50 a night. On the up side we met Kent and Jane Overbeck on the dock. Although we never met before, we had lots of mutual friends from the Loop in 2012/2013. They gave us a tour of their new power cat, a PDQ 34 called Rising Tide...it is beautiful!
Tuesday, April 5th we arrived in St. Augustine early and had plenty of time to pick up a mooring and then spend the afternoon in town. It was very warm once away from the water but not so much out on the mooring!
Our last night in Florida was at the free Sister Creek dock at Jacksonville - a stop we've made each time we came theough here. There were only three cruisers here this time and three small pontoon boats that also stayed overnight - with tents to fit over their blow-up beds.
We didn't plan ahead so couldn't get a mooring at Fernandina Beach, so after taking on fuel and pumping out, we travelled another 7 miles to Cumberland Island, Georgia and anchored for the night. It was a beautiful warm day which we spent on the Atlantic side beach watching the wild horses and picking up shells.
