In the ice

15 August 2010 | Well & truly in the ice, South of Griffith's Island
Liz for Dermot
Well we were doing so well. Seemed as though there was a clear lead along our path, south of known area of very thick 9/10ths ice east of resolute and other ice below us. We headed for the southern edge of Griffith's Island which was supposed to be ice-free with the intention of then attempting Peel Sound. I was off watch and trying to sleep in my berth in the fo'scle (for the non- nautical amongst you, that is the front pointy end) when I was disturbed by the always unpleasant sound of ice scrunching on the hull together with the engine going forward and astern. When I got up on deck it was clear we were well and truly stuck. The lead that Andrew and Sibeal had been following had disappeared.

It was obvious that after a trial of attempting to pole floes apart (not sure that this version of pole-dancing on ice will catch on) that we weren't going anywhere for a while so I stepped off the boat to admire the view!

Eventually things did open up a little and we were able to return to the lead we'd entered via.

It was obvious that we were not going to get in to Peel Sound today and nor could we get to Resolute.

This left only one option- returning to Beechy Island!
