Happy New Year!

We looked forward to our partners, Kevin and Lizz, arriving for two weeks together aboard Occam's. We decide to head back to Culebra for New Year's. Kevin and Lizz are the ones who introduced us to Culebra and Culebrita years ago, so it was great to be there and experience it with them. On New Year's Eve, the streets of downtown Culebra are blocked off and a street party takes over. It was a great night full of lots of laughs, music, and dancing. We again met up with Nestor and Annabelle during our stay. They were generous enough to pick-up a portable generator for us during one of their trips to Puerto Rico. Having a generator is a game changer for our power needs and keeps us from having to run the engine to top off our house batteries. We had a less than pleasant sail from Culebra to St. Croix with the wind on our nose. After 11 hours of "beating into it," we could not get off of the boat fast enough to enjoy dinner on solid ground. St. Croix was nice to experience with friends who have already been there. We rented a car and toured the island. The island is very dog friendly and a bit of a ghost town in some areas after the largest private sector employer, HOVENSA (an oil refinery), closed in 2012. This was a loss of 4,300 jobs. On our tour of the island, we did stop at the Cruzan rum distillery. It was a good tour with lots of samples and drinks at its conclusion which Lizz and I graciously gave to the guys. Kevin and Lizz brought us to the Mount Pellier Domino Club where we could witness beer drinking "pigs." Don't worry, it was non-alcoholic beer. These boars reminded me of a scene in Hannibal. If you have seen the movie, you know what I am talking about. Scary! We visited the Estate Mt. Washington Plantation and Labryinth. This was on the suggestion from a bartender we kept running into. None of us were sure what he was really talking about. It turned out to be something alright, something great and unexpected. Check it out at http://lifeinusvi.com/estate-mount-washington-plantation/. I don't think the pictures do it justice. The day ended with what I am told was a spectacular green flash. Yep, I missed it! I heard the roar of the crowd at the beach bar while I was looking away and knew instantly what they were cheering about.
