First Landfall
01 January 2009 | St Helena, S Atlantic
The Crew
For the more observant of you will already have spotted Oceans Dream at anchor. (She is the second yacht in from the right). We made landfall a 0930 on New Years Day and the picture was taken from just above Jamestown. Some key facts on St Helena: 47 sq miles, Pop 4000. Discovered by Portuguese explorer in 1502. Napolean was exiled here in 1815 and died on the island in 1821. It was used as a prisoner of war camp during the Boer war. The Island is totally reliant upon resupply by sea and the next arrival of the Royal Mail Ship is on 6 Jan and so the shelves are looking a little bare!. Having spent 13 days at sea we were anxious to get ashore and stretch our legs. The first few steps were definitely a bit wobbly trying to compensate for movement that wasn't there! We were warmly welcomed by everyone we met and as this is John's 30th visit everyone knew him. We were soon walking around the Saint FM studios listening to the live New Yeas Day broadcast. There was a bit of a 'hung-over' atmosphere around and so we decided to tackle Jacobs Steps - 699 of them each one with an 11" rise. Probably not the best thing to do but the view from the top was fantastic. Saturday was spent doing some shopping and carrying out the first service and oil change on the engines. On Monday we head off on a tour of the Island and then we will up anchor and start our 12 day crossing of the S Atlantic to Brazil. Thanks to everyone who have left comments. We had our first opportunity to read them today since leaving Cape Town.
