Heading out with Sergio

Bill, warm

After a quick breakfast, we cast off the dock lines and headed out. Yesterday morning the winds were howling in the mid-20 knot range, but today they were calm. We put up the mainsail after clearing the harbor, but there was little wind. As we were crossing the San Lorenzo Channel, which separates the Baja peninsula from the islands, Sergio hooked a big fish. He battled it for 30 minutes, while I drove the boat in circles to assist in catching the fish. It was a 30# Jack Crevalle, which is a strong blue water fish, but not much good for eating, or so we thought. So we released it and continued on our way.
With no wind, it was sweltering, and we couldn't wait to jump in the water. We arrived at Ensenada Del Candelero, my newest favorite spot, and dropped anchor in the bright blue water. After swimming and cooling off, we put up the sun shade and dropped the dinghy in the water. While buying Sergio his fishing license, we learned that fishing and spearfishing are allowed at the islands in most spots. So we loaded up the dinghy with dive gear and spearguns, and headed to the big rock formation that gives this place it's name.
Neither of us are much of a shot with spearguns, but we eventually got a couple fish for dinner. We seemed to be surrounded by sea turtles since our arrival, as they were spotted almost every time we looked at the water. I need to get some lightweight boat shoes because yesterday I must have kicked various boat parts five or six times, drawing blood each time. Damn! As we were getting ready to make dinner, a nice breeze finally came up and helped cool things down. After a nice fish dinner, we enjoyed the sunset and then the stars.
