Bill, Breezy and overcast
01/13/15
Today started with a cloudy sky and a light breeze. Some boats were making preparations to head out, and soon there were just five boats left. We were the only sloop (single mast) of the bunch, with one schooner (two masts, aft one tallest), and three ketches (two masts, forward one tallest). Susan and I paddleboarded to the other end of the bay and went on the beach. I made a quick trip back to Odyssey for a shirt and some shoes, then we began shell hunting in ernest. We met several people while on the beach, one couple from France living aboard their sailboat, and another man from Canada, living the dream aboard his vessel. They gave us a weather report for strong northerly winds to come up soon. We returned to Odyssey loaded with small dried sea stars.

After a quick lunch, we took the dinghy around the point to snorkel, and to try once again to spear dinner. On the way there we stopped to chat with a guy who had just anchored near us. His name was Bruce, and he offered us some fresh Dorado for dinner. We saw lots of different fish, one moray eel, and a variety of crabs, both both of us admitted to freezing the whole time. Pretty funny when the water is around 70 degrees. I managed to spear a good-sized fish, so we were not going to starve. We ended up swapping Bruce a package of tortillas for the Dorado, so we were able to repay his kindness.

Back on board Susan realized that she had gotten stung by something on her arms while snorkeling. I remembered seeing small, delicate-looking strings of jellyfish, not much bigger than buttons. That is probably what got her. We ended up using vinegar on the sore areas, which gave her instant relief. With the afternoon clouding up it looked like we wouldn't be seeing the sunset tonight. Oh well, they can't always be perfect! We ended up mixing some of the raw dorado with soy sauce, sesame oil, avocado, and red onions, and serving it with crackers. Quite delicious! Dinner consisted of fish tacos and leftover curry. Simple but satisfying. Another movie and then we hit the hay.
