HOME!!!!!!!!!

24 May 2009 | Burnham Cove, Boothbay, ME
JGK - 66 degrees at 7:30
Left at 4:45am this morning (light - sunrise @ 5am) and arrived home at 4:30. Hustled out of the boat due to low water at the dock - association - ours was already dry. Made it the last few feet dragging in the mud. Little wind today, rain for about 3 hours, but the sun broke out as we reached Boothbay.
Trip Log 4420 (5086 statute miles)(75nm today)!!!!! since leaving Boothbay last August. Sue took care of me, I took care of her, and Oddsey took care of both of us. Oddsey looks a bit worse off for the trip, but a little work will bring her back looking like she never made the trip.
We knew this before we left, but this is the best place we've seen on the whole trip(meaning Boothbay first and New England in general second). We sure live in a beautiful area.

Flush toilets, ample hot water, large galley, large living area, huge refrigerator, food readily available, did I say flush toilets?, warm living areas, electricity, clean showers where you don't have to wear your sandals, and no more BLOG

Back in Maine

23 May 2009 | York, Me
JGK -
Left at 5:15am and arrived here at 12:30. Basically too much sea and headwind to go further. Also too cold out. We slogged out around Cape Ann this am and set sail. Rather than Casco Bay area, the closest we could sail was Portsmouth. Motoring into headwinds and seas was not an option. Forcast was for the winds to clock to the southeast, and if they did, we could have clocked with them down the coast, but they didn't. In fact, they veared more northerly. At the shoals, we got as close as possible and sailed most of the way to York and gave up.

70 miles to home remaining and if the winds and seas cooperate, we should get there late tomorrow. Yea!

Speed Log 46.0, Trip Log 4345(40nm), Rough, cold and windy.

Very nice day

22 May 2009 | Gloucester, Ma
JGK - 86 degrees at 4:30
Left Onset in moderate high winds at 6:30 am. Once heading east in the canal, winds calmed and we had good current in our favor. Exited the canal about one hour after leaving, which is pretty good considering the canal is 9 miles plus getting out of Onset.
Got to Gloucester at 3:45. Town mooring in Smith Cove. Pretty unique place.
After sailing past Plymouth, the winds calmed. Seas were pretty flat. Just some wind ripples. No traffic crossing Massachusetts Bay. Sun was out, got down to a Tee toward the end of the day. Pretty nice for New England in May.
SL 65.6, Trip Log 4305.

Cape Cod

21 May 2009 | Onset, MA
JGK - 70 degrees at 3pm - very windy
Left Newport at 6am and arrived here around 1:30. Forcast was for small craft after 11 am with winds 15-20 and gusts to 25 from the southwest. Pretty much correct, but didn't cause much concern for most of the trip, since we were going directly downwind as soon as we got into Buzzards Bay.
However, when we got to the cape cod canal dike, wow! Must have been 6-8' chop for about a mile. Incredibly hard to steer in.
A sailboat approached us going the opposite direction. Similar size to ours. When we got close, he steered straight for us. Had three guys on board. His boat was almost airborn at times. Came way to close and waved to me., laughing. Thought it was great fun. Unbelievable what idiots they breed around here. Name of the boat was "Heavens Door". He will be "Knock, Knock, Knocking on Heavens Door" real soon, they way he drives. Watch out for him, everybody.

You know what is really ironic. I get local temperatures on the internet as well as Boothbay every day. Today is 82 in Boothbay. It has pretty much been warmer every day in Boothbay since Annapolis.

Rhode Island

20 May 2009 | Newport
JGK
Left at 6:30 and arrived at Newport somewhere around 3 or 3:30. SL 60.8, Trip Log 4198(59nm).
Sunny, little wind, current mostly with us.
Got a mooring ($45) with no facility, launch service or showers included.
Launch is $3/person one way! So I launched the dinghy. Believe it or not, the last time I ran the dinghy motor was in the Bahamas. It started!
Walked to the stop and shop, really needed a walk, six days without getting off the boat. Needed some fresh food also.
Got back to the dinghy and the bay had about a 2' short wind driven chop. Everything, us and the food got wet. Doesn't pay to cheep out on the launch, huh?
Saw a sub outside in the New London channel as we went by today. We both thought it was an island with a building on it. Huge.

Most of Long Island Sound

19 May 2009 | Westbrook, CT.
JGK - 61 degrees at 5:20
Left at 6am and arrived here at 4:30. Flat seas, some wind, currents in our favor for most of day. Tried to reach Fisher Island, but current turned against us and we would have gotten there after 9pm, so we turned in here. Sunny day.
