DAY 33 -the beautiful fishing port of Ribadesello
17 July 2015

After 5 relaxing days in Santander, it was time to move on as the med was still ages away so yesterday we set sail again . We had a very uneventful sail , 60 miles from Santander to Ribadesello. Wind for the morning, then nothing , so we motored across flat , really flat, seas for what seemed like hours! As before the highlight of trip was crabs!Ricky even tried to relieve the boredom and entertain me by balancing cushions on his head ( will download pictures later- they have to be seen to be believed!!)
Then, when we finally reached Ribadesello the journey seemed so worth it . We tentatively turned the corner into the bay as the tide was out and there was very little water under our keel, then as we continued between the rocks and turned back on ourselves into the port, the view took our breath away. Set amidst the mountainous backdrop, was this stunning Spanish port . It looked more like I would imagine Austria to look, with houses resembling ski lodges with tiled roofs. As we carefully crept past a sandy beach and lamppost lined promenade , in barely 3 metres of water, we were relieved to see John stood on the pontoon in the marina, pointing out where we should he heading to avoid the shallows.
We parked the boat and stood staring at the scenery, eyes agog - we really had no idea that such incredible, unspoilt places existed, not so very far from home . Such a far cry from the ghastly images of Spain that places like Benidorm portray.
Today we have had a wonderful day with Jane and John. After checking in with the harbour master and realising that this amazing place was actually the cheapest so far '15 euros a day,' we decided this was not somewhere we were in a hurry to leave.
We have spent the day exploring a bit of the town on our bikes, having a wonderful lunch, visiting a chapel on a hill, a cave and a museum , finally ending up on 'Peneloppe III ' Jane and Johns boat, eating, chatting and drinking. Even Ricky has had a few beers , so we'll both sleep well tonight.
So I'll say night night.
Take care everyone,
Donna and Ricky x
