DAY 43 - swimming with Derek the dolphin

27 July 2015
Today has been amazing - I have dreamed since I was a little girl of swimming with dolphins and today Ricky and I swam with Derek the dolphin !
He arrived at our stern at about 12.30 and was just swimming about , so I tentatively got into the water and watched him under the water with my goggles. He swam directly underneath me which was thrilling so I called Ricky to come in. Slowly Derek got closer and then when he swam to the bow of the boat Ricky dived down to meet him using the anchor chain to pull himself down . what happened next was amazing - they both stared at each other and surfaced parallel like 2 synchronised swimmers. Wow it was awesome - one of those moments that will stay with you forever. I got braver and very soon also found myself face to face with this magnificent creature. Staring into the open mouth of a dolphin barely a foot away, seeing his teeth and not being scared , knowing he won't hurt you is mind blowing. We spent over an hour playing in the water, he swam up to us, under us, over us and his favourite game, surfacing right next to us and then diving back down . Life just can't get better than this !!!

And then it did - we were just sat on boat deciding what to have for tea about 7.30 pm and Derek turned up again to play - in fact I have to stop writing this as he has just started tugging our anchor chain again and I have to go and see - it's almost midnight - cheeky we're not going in again it's bed time !
I think he just came to say good night cos by the time I got out on deck he'd swam off. Ricky said he popped up a few times, but it was hard to see him in the moonlight. Can't wait to see if he comes around tomorrow !
Where was I ? - oh yes tea time . Derek came and made an awful fuss until Ricky got in the water . I got some video footage and a couple of pictures, but then abandoned the camera to join in the fun. Derek was even more bold this time and appeared to be enjoying the company as much as us . As I said at the beginning of this blog -Today has been amazing ! Dolphins really are magical creatures.
Night night all. Take care ,
A very humble Donna x
