DAY 77 -Chipiona

30 August 2015
Crikey Rats !! What a hectic last couple of days..

Left Baleeiro at 7.40 on Friday morning heading for Faro, a place we were both looking forward to visiting. Just after we had set sail, Jayne radioed us to point out the rainbow in the cloud above (see photo). What a magical start to the day!

We had a glorious sail in the sunshine( I even got to sit on the bow in my Miss Marple hat), only to be kept out of Faro by a rip roaring tide coming out of the river .We did try but at one point we were almost definitely going nowhere ! That'll teach us to check what the books actually mean when they say the tide runs . We thought we had left planning trips around the tide times further north.

We managed to anchor outside and decided we would either stay put or enter once the tide died down . We did neither - Ricky said I quote "Sod it let's eat then do a night sail to Cadiz."

Cadiz was the first place abroad I ever visited in 1974 on the School Ship SS Navassa, so I didn't need persuading. We ate tea with Delphinus crew then at 11pm set off again. I had high hopes of having a trip down memory lane in Cadiz but things didn't go to plan.

The night sail was good as we saw two pods of dolphins under the full moon, but by lunch time ,as we got within 12 miles from Cadiz ,the wind was unkind and we were slamming into waves, with the wind dead ahead and losing all our speed, so ...
We changed tack again( literally this time) and decided to head for Chipiona instead which was off the wind , just north inside of the bay we had just come across, which is where we are now.
It is a Lovely seaside town . We went for a pizza and as we strolled back along the sandy beach about 9pm there was a group of older ladies sat on beach chairs, in a circle, playing bingo - amazing!
The wind was warm so why not?

Today we have been showered by orange rain that has made all the boats look rusty. Apparently not the Sahara sand this time but from Northern Spain.
It even left dirty orange marks on my glasses, as I got caught in a down pour on the way back from the laundry.

Hope you are all well - off to eat home made brownies on Delphinus- yum !
