2 clueless day skippers with Patience

Zakynthos (Zante) - Dancing in Alykes Nikolaos then south to zante Town.

Friday 10th June
We arrived on the island of Zante at Alykes Nikolaos, around 5.30 pm.As we rounded the coast to enter the busy port we were met by a rib with 2 smiley chaps aboard. One introduced himself as Costas and the other he referred to as his captain. Costa offered us a free mooring with water, showers and electricity, in exchange for buying a meal in his Taverna - only if we liked - a win win in my book. Free mooring and we didn't have to cook in the ever increasing heat. The Captain, (we nick named him Papa)actually came aboard our boat and helped us moor behind one of the family run glass bottom tourist boats. In fact the whole family had jobs, in addition to the fleet of small boats, they ran the shop, excursions, a hotel, an uncle even sold home made honey and olive oil on the quayside- deelish! We stayed for 4 nights and were treated like one of the family, they even got Ricky up Greek dancing - it was hilarious ! True to their word they never badgered us to spend any money,in fact Costas invited Ricky to watch England play on the TV and bought him beer.

The azure blue water in the bay was crystal clear and we could see the boats anchors, metres below, a fact that the family were very proud of.

Donna's Wildlife Watch:
Much of the island is still unspoilt, there are beautiful green forested mountains that drop off to a turquoise sea with little coves that can only be reached from the sea.

Perhaps the most famous area of all, along the south coast,is the Bay of Laganas. Here, each year, between May and mid August, the Loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta)return to the beach they were born on, crawl up the sand and lay their eggs. Some migrate thousands of Kilometres to reproduce within the bay.We have been privileged to see these magnificent creatures whilst sailing, but our hope is that we will one day witness the miracle of the tiny babies hatching and making their way to the sea.Now wouldn't that be an awesome Wildlife Watch?
For now, dear readers, we can only offer you a kinda chilled out red starfish(Frommia milleporella) sat on a rock, sheltering under the shade of our boat .

Monday June 20th
Guest Bloggers Wendy and Mel here...we are now enjoying the last of our 5 days with Donna and Ricky here in Zante. After almost killing Donna with the shock of Wendy being here, it was supposed to be just me (Mel). We have had a wonderful few days on a beautiful island. Lots of laughs, drinks and lovely food. We can confirm to you all at home that Donna and Ricky both look amazing. Apart from that we can say no more because...WHAT HAPPENS IN ZANTE, STAYS IN ZANTE!! Xx

Sad times as evidence is piling up on our shores confirming that we are not looking after our planet.
