2 clueless day skippers with Patience

More of the Peloponnese and more storms !

13 September 2016
The lovely thing about sailing South is that it gets warmer.

Saturday 3rd September
We left Katakolon and headed towards Kiparissia, which was described in the pilot book as an excellent place to stop on the way up or down the Western Poloponnese. On route we passed a 'real' Disney Princess Castle on the seafront at Agrilos. It was built by a local greek chap who made his fortune in America. It is called The Kastro Paramython, translated as the 'Castle of Fairy Tales.'The little child in me wanted to stop and go inside but the grown up just took the photo as we sailed past. Many may say 'gory and out of place' but I say as follies go, in my opinion, it was pretty spectacular!

We moored alongside the quay at Kiparissia, added extra ropes and metal springs and braced ourselves for the 'forecast' weather to hit. However, the following morning the weather was fine so we walked around the town and found an old railway station with a steam locomotive rusting away amongst the undergrowth, sheltering a mum and 3 kittens. The next day, as we are so fond of castles and it was still good weather we hiked all the way up the hill behind the port. Unfortunately there was little left of the castle except a few walls but there was a small open air theatre and a great view. We had a coffee and beer in the cafe under the castle, where the only dragon left scaling the castle walls was a long tailed lizard.

We spoke too soon - Tuesday the rains came, then the thunder, then the lightening. The electric storm lasted longer than any I've seen. It lit up the whole sky and the thunder was deafening! Winds up to 50 knots !!

But ... We survived - yay !! And we made some lovely new friends , who had also weathered the storm. The two Nauticat crews, Simone and Jean-Pierre and Marie, Pelle and their teeny poodle Milou (who Ricky and I took for a walk). Thanks to Mandy and Graham from Australia, who invited us and Jo and Graham from the Isle of Wight sailing 'Maid by the sea' onboard their Cat 'Roulette' for drinks and a fab spread of homemade Greek tapas-deelish xx

Saturday 10th September
After a week, we were both ready to leave Kiparissia. Of the new storm shelterer friends we'd met, we were the last to leave, but we were cautious as we wanted to make sure the storm had really gone.

Our next stop Pilos, where we moored stern to on what looked like a fishermans slime line, having been directed by an 'unofficial' marinaro, whom one had to admire for both his cheek and entrepreneurism - he got 3 euros off us ! We met up with Johnnie and Bernadette on Jambo and had a wonderful few days which included fabulous dining on Jambo, Paddle boarding - hilarious, a trip in the car to Methoni, many laughs and naturally far too much to drink!

Until next time,
Antio ( goodbye in Greek)

Sad times as evidence is piling up on our shores confirming that we are not looking after our planet.
