A birthday to remember on Corfu

12 April 2017
As I have already mentioned, Lakka on the island of Paxos, is one of my fave spots, so when some interesting, unsettled weather, flagged up on the weather charts, I was more than happy to stay alongside the quay to sit it out.
As is often the case, the really strong Southerly winds didn't come, but they were quite breezy and we had a couple of days with rain and were treated to thunder and lightning at night.

Wednesday 5th April
I could stretch out my stay in Lakka no longer, but as the winds were still Southerly, we decided to return to Corfu to meet up with Johnnie, our friend from Valencia, who had come out on his tod to launch 'Jambo' for the season.
We booked into Gouvia Marina, took advantage of the showers and the wonderful Johnnie treated the three of us to dinner in the 'Navigators'. Burgers and chips all round, beer and wine, wonderful company (as always) - a real treat , Thankyou Johnnie xx

Alas, since our last stay in the marina, only 11 days ago the prices have doubled, so this was a fleeting visit. We left after lunch , heading for the bay of Agios Stephanos , recommended by Johnnie. The bay was lovely , but the ground too tough this early in the season for our anchor to dig into, so we moved onto Kassiopi , where there was a town quay. We had to play 'dodge it' with the rocks , but with Reannas extra pair of eyes, we were able to find a great spot alongside inside the break water.

Kassiopi is on the North East side of Corfu, level with Albania. It has a pretty harbour and village, overlooked by a castle on the headland. It was a nice spot and as it was my birthday in a couple of days I got to choose how long we stayed. I fancied hiring a car on my birthday and going on a road trip around Corfu, with a picnic lunch. Kassiopi was geared for tourists ( rather too much if I'm honest) so hiring a car was not a problem. Reanna found a nice taverna ( more like an English Bar really ) where she could do her uni work , so the decision to stay until after my birthday, was made.

Sunday 9th April
My day started with a home made Baileys Birthday cake and pressies in bed. We picked up the hire car (VW Polo with air con no less) and headed around the coast and inland, up to the highest point in Corfu. From here, as you can see from the photo, the views
were amazing. We shared our picnic lunch with a possy of pretty stray cats, but unfortunately they were really hungry and fought with each other for the scraps. One even lashed out at me and caught me with his claw in an attempt to insure he bagged the next morsal. We finally said goodbye to the cats and headed back down the mountain to follow the coast road down to Sidari, one of the beaches on the North coast. Here we had a beer and Ricky beat both Reanna and I at boules. They went and had a game of pool and air hockey, whilst I sat enjoying the sunshine watching two young men cantering bare back along the sand . We stopped once more on the way home, at Georgios beach on the West side of the island. My intention was to swim, but the sun was losing it's heat , so I was happy just to sit and relax on the beach, reflecting on what a lovely birthday I'd had around the Island of Corfu. A birthday to remember.

All for now folks,
Donna ( sadly now 58) and Ricky xx
