bad day

09 August 2011
Sean
Well, this morning the day started off with a bang. Our engine overheated and just as Tim killed the motor we were hit by a huge squall. I attempted to shorten the staysail (our smallest forward sail), but I couldn't pull it in myself. 'mI guessing we had about 35 knots of wind on it. Tim helped and we were able to furl it in. Then, the dinghy got all maladjusted on deck. I grabbed my tether and spent a few minutes trying to convince the good fellow to move back to its correct position. But he wouldn't move, and then we got hit by another squall. I ran back to the cockpit and then received the full force of a wave that broke across the aft section of the boat. After the squall I moved the dinghy back with my Superman strength, and then tied it back to the deck properly. I then attempted to diagnose the engine overheating problem. I checked the strainer, began to undo the impeller, and then noticed that the alternator belt wasn't on the alternator. I decided that this is the most likely culprit, but we're unable to repair it in these seas. We have 12 - 14 foot seas today and 20-25 knot winds.

For Scott: We had pop tarts for breakfast; peanuts for lunch; and canned stew for dinner.

Okay, that's all I can handle tonight. Thanks everyone for writing. It means a lot!
