Santa Barbara

06 March 2007 | Santa Barbara
Sean
The wind blew hard all night. I fell into a deep sleep around 4:00 am. Kathy woke me up at 7:00. "It's time to wake up honey!" I'm sorry, but that statement just never sounds good. She made me a new cup of coffee. Thanks to our friend Rebecca we now had good coffee to drink. She taught us that there were alternatives to instant coffee. We just had to believe... Thanks Rebecca!

I went outside and all the wind was gone. Sure - now that we were leaving. We got the anchor up after dislodging some kelp, and Kathy sent me back to bed. I instantly collapsed and didn't wake up until 10:30. I heard a strange noise like the engine was grinding. I tried to localized it and found my way out into the cockpit. I was about to ask Kathy what was wrong when I saw her playing her tin whistle. I quickly realized that this was the noise that had worried me. Now I was worried that my wife had gone insane. "I'm bored," she said and continued playing. I tried to find a place to make the noise stop.

The waters in Southern California are very different than Northern California. The seas had really smoothed out. The air was warm. The many oil platforms were in view... I sat and looked out for a couple of hours marveling at the pretty mountains.

We arrived at Santa Barbara around 2:00. Santa Barbara is a HUGE harbor. Well, the biggest we've ever been to. We called ahead to get a slip, but they told us that we had to go to the office. What is this - high school? Just give us a slip. The wind was blowing pretty good as we entered the marina. We saw that the office dock was already occupied. We, or rather Kathy, decided to dock at the Yacht club. We walked to the office and got our new slip assignment. We were escorted back to our boat by one of the harbor police. We got to ride in his boat. He had dye tablets that we had to flush down our toilet. The fine: 1 THOUSAND dollars and 1 year suspension from the marina if we spill any septic. These dye tablets would form a pink cloud around the offending boat. HARSH!

We walked to our new slip and realized that it was all wrong for us. That, and we saw a way better slip that was closer to the bathrooms. We called them and they were really nice. They gave us a sixty foot slip. Our 42 ft. Catalina looks tiny next to all the mega yachts next to us. I try not to notice.
