Jib roller furling breaks

17 May 2008 | Marquesas
Sean
Our jib's roller furling wouldn't furl this morning. I first tried using the force on it. "You want to furl," I said as I waved my hand. Unfortunately, it appears that roller furlings are not so weak minded. I had to result to using another force - I wrapped the furling line around the winch. It still didn't budge. The force is strong in this one.

This all happened around 4:00 am. If you were woken by a scream at this time, it was most likely me screaming in my best Captain Kirk Kahn yelling imitation. Kathy came out on deck and yelled at me for breaking the roller furling system. That may have been the second scream you heard.

Once light came and after a lot of work, we dropped the jib. I, then, deemed the entire system to be working. We raised the jib and then attempted to furl it in. It didn't budge. Kathy yelled at me some more.

We dropped the jib again and then read every bit of literature that we had on the subject. Literature may be too kind of word, though, but I told Kathy that it was the best of times, and the worst of times. She wasn't amused.

After dousing the entire system in WD-40 we raised the jib again. It worked - ONCE! I've been too scared to try again and will wait until the weather is 40+ knots to find out that it's still broken.

We lost all our wind today and we're currently drifting. Things are desperate, my friends, someone has been eating all the Chip's Ahoy cookies. More on this THIVERY later.
