ADVENTURE IS ROBBED!

29 August 2008 | Bora Bora
Tara
We spent about three hours at a birthday party at the Bora Bora yacht club only to come back to Adventure to find that we'd been robbed. We didn't notice at first, of course I didn't notice, because my room's always a mess. But after a while we started to notice things that were out of place, like one of our flashlights by my closet and the bookshelves out of order. My dad figured it out first, you could see his epiphany in his shocked expression. "Guys, I think we got robbed..."

The first thing we did was look for our computers, the most valuable things we have onboard. All three lap tops were stolen. Most of our recent pictures (since we left Panama) were on the laptops and backed up on an external hard drive that was also taken. My dad searched for his bucket of cables and connectors for his electronic equipment. Stolen. Waterproof flashlights. Stolen. binoculars, a video camera, all of our hundreds of movies, our grandfather's wallet, glasses, passport, ipod and plane tickets. Gone. My Dad's wallet, too.

All that was left on our boat were muddy foot and hand prints. We know that the thief took his time, thoroughly sweeping through the living room, and my and Casey's bedrooms. The fact that thief didn't get to my parent's room or the bathroom makes us think that we might have interrupted him when we drove up. That creeped us out a little bit. The thieves stole pretty much everything of value, except (thank God) the things that would stop our trip and leave us sitting here, waiting for parts. Like, they didn't steal our generator, or our autopilot, or our navigation computer...

The next thing that happened was that my parents went ashore to go call the police, while the rest of us pathetically mourned the loss of our stuff in silence. Casey made up a list of all of the things that were missing. With every item she added to the list, sighs and "oh no"'s circulated through Adventure.

Being robbed was kind of unnerving. For example, last night I slept with the Circle Trilogy (a huge hardcover book) in my arms (to throw at the unsuspecting robber) and a thick board from my bookshelf (to whack the unsuspecting robber if the book didn't do the job). I was exhausted and had a stomach ache when I finally got into bed. I just wanted a looong massage and a huge bar of chocolate. I tried to sleep, but every little noise sent me barreling out of my room, book and board in hand.

The Gendarme (police) and the American Consolate in Tahiti are trying to help my grandfather, because he was supposed to leave for Florida today. Without his passport and other information, it is going to be a mess to get him back home.

Right now, all of our friends are really coming through for us. They're letting us use their computers for internet and are willing to help us out a lot. Sally even came over this morning to see us. She seemed pretty angry at the thief. "Oh, this is disgusting! If he's in a boat right now, I hope it sinks!!" She cried in her English accent. We appreciated her genuine concern.

The owner of the yacht club is a local and he's organized some sort of sting operation to see if he can find out if the thieves are selling our stuff in the black market. Apparently, kids steal stuff like this and, after wiping the computers clean, they sell them. Hopefully, they aren't ID theives, because they have ALL of our information on the computers and in the wallets. They really hit the jackpot. Anyway, it's only 2 months before we get to New Zealand, where we can re-purchase the stuff that was taken. I think we'll live...
