Gerry was up dressed and ready to go this morning whilst I was still trying to force my eyelids apart. I did manage to get out of bed and start drinking my coffee before he took off around the road to the yard. On arriving at the yard he found nothing happening at our boat - not that it should have come as any surprise really after all this is the islands Mon! off Gerry stomped to the marina office to find out when they were going to begin sanding the boat, he was met with a surprised question - "oh you want us to do the sanding?" this shouldn't have come as any sort of surprise as it was on their work order sheet. A brief conversation took place and 2 guys were allocated to sand the hull, I was glad I wasn't there to witness the steam coming out of Gerry's ears! Anyway the guys set to and began the messy job of sanding the old anti fouling paint back as much as possible. Gerry meanwhile set about cleaning up the propeller with a battery operated wire brush. At around 10.30
he returned to the apartment as there was nothing else he could do for the moment as the batteries for the electric wire brush needed re charging - it was a waiting game; the yard guys meanwhile were continuing with sanding the hull. We had an early lunch and then we both returned to the yard to see what progress had been made and to do a couple of small jobs. The guys that were tasked with the sanding were off at lunch, the progress seemed slow but it was obvious where they had been working. I set about marking the anchor chain by spray painting a few links white at 50feet from the anchor, a few links yellow at 75 feet from the anchor and a few links red at 100 feet from the anchor. The reason for this is so that we have a visual of how much anchor chain is paid out when we anchor. Meanwhile Gerry did a little more wire brushing on the area around the propeller then he unbolted and removed 6 sacrificial zincs which need replacing. By now the clock had ticked around to 1.25pm, the guys lunch was supposed to be from 12 until 1pm but what's 25 minutes between paying customers and the workers? Anyway they reappeared and suited up to begin with the continuation of their sanding and Gerry and I left them to it as we had no intention of doing a repeat "Smurf look alike" - for those who have never seen the photos of us in 2007 when we sanded our last boat - you just need to use your imagination! To say that Gerry is disappointed and frustrated is an understatement, he had wanted to get stuck into painting the anti-fouling on the hull tomorrow but I suspect that isn't going to happen because the sanding is taking longer than he had expected. We left the yard and went to buy the paint and the new zincs which we can't put on until the sanding is finished. With nothing else to do for the moment we returned to the apartment once more and spent the rest of the afternoon reading, relaxing and planning our next moves. We picked up Lorie from her dock and the
three of us went for an early dinner at the container park which was better than staying at home and cooking any day! After dropping Lorie back to the marina we headed home for yet another early night. Let's hope the guys made a heap of progress this afternoon and we can begin with the painting tomorrow.
