Tehuantepec and the big fish

04 February 2012 | Gulf of Tehuantepec
John
I think I figured out why these have not been getting through the auto blog when I use my SSB. I had copied the subject wrong from my other computer which is the one I use on the internet and it worked. So time will tell and this should make it into the blog. If you wondered what the previous ones said, its not important because it was really my test to confirm it being passed correctly. OK looks like we will be motoring all the way into Quetzal Guatamala from here. No wind nor any predicted. It is interesting to think that back 20-30 years ago before sail boat manufacturers started putting larger auxiliaries and fuel tanks in the boats, one would have to wait to cross this dangerous gulf of Tehuanepec when there was wind. This was a short window for us to cross because as of tomorrow evening the winds are supposed to build up to gale force throughout the entire gulf with winds in the center predicted to reach 40-50 knots. Not a place we care to be. We did hit it just right because the strongest winds for a stretch of about 30 miles in the center at force 4 or 18 knots. We are still bucking a huge current at 2.2-2.5 knots so although we are able to do 8 knots over water we are only averaging 6 over ground. Forgot to mention in my last update that we caught a very large Dalphin for gringos, Dorado for hispanics or Mahi Mahi for polynesians. It was about 44" long. Will upload picture when I have internet. Ended up with about 15lbs of steaks and pieces for sandwiches and another pound for ceviche. Took me over an hour to filet and clean. This should have been the second in four days but the first one got away. On our way into Chehue we were fishing with poles because we were under sail and taking our time. My hearing is so bad that I didn't hear the reel spinning like mad. Lisa was vacuuming the inside and could figure out what the whining noise was when she looked out and the starboard pole was dancing. By the time I got to the pole there was hardly any line left. Had to put my thumbs on the spool to slow it down. When I did the dorado came out of the water and danced for a while. Did that several times before Lisa could get the speed of the boat down by turning into the wind. After a couple of dances and me finally getting about 1/3rd of my line back on the reel the fish came out of the water for one more dance and kicked the hook out. I was bummed because that was the first good fish we had a chance to catch in several months. It was the same size as the one we finally got in yesterday. Anyway we quit fishing because we don't have any room left in the freezer with all the store bought frozen items.
