Gone from Quetzal

08 February 2012 | Crossing boarder to El Salvador
John
We are heading for Papagayo Costa Rica bypassing El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. We took a little tour yesterday to an active volcano. It was about an hour's drive. We rented some horses and rode up to near the crater. There were several vents as we walked the last 500 yards. One in particular was very hot but not with steam. You could toast a marshmellow in the small cave where the rocks were shy of molten. Then we walked over to another spot that formed a large cave. This mountain blew about 4 years ago and when it did a very large chunk was pitched part way down the hill and landed on other rocks. There it formed a very large cave. We walked into it and there were three more entrances but from above. Had our picture take in the cave and through the top holes. On our way back down I decided to give my horse and backside a break so after crossing the last hill and heading down I got off and the horse and I walked down. At the bottom there was a small shanty where you could buy refreshments or have a cup of home grown, roasted and brewed coffee. It was excellent coffee and I think that is the first time Lisa has ever drank coffee without anything in it. One of the two guys who set up the coffee plantation, approximately 5 acres, was from upstate New York. He spends his summers at home for 6 months then travels down to Guatemala for the other 6 months. They had planted the coffee plants just before the volcano blew so it took them a couple more years to get the plants growing again and this was the first season they actually got some coffee beans. I bought a pound of coffee from them. First sale.

We left the Valcano we went to another spot further West just of the coast to find some rocks. Special rocks because they date back at least 300 years. The one rock had a face carved in it similar to the faces on the pyramids in Egypt. The other a picture of a warrior with hunting tools. There has not been any archeological dig there but the story is that there is a buried city or encampment there but it was probably covered up by one of the many volcanos that dot the country. All for now.
