Papeete Medical Conclusion

John
I am back at the center of things on the boat. The medical procedure, angiogram, went better than expected. They found nothing drastically wrong with my heart. I have a pretty little drawing of where the blockages and the percentage are located. The worst was the left coronary artery which was about 50% blocked and he said he didn't think that was the cause of the dive incident. The other two are at 20 and 30% and are of no consequence. He also said that the arteries were very clear of plack which indicates the medication I have been taking and lowered colesteral is all working. The cardiologist as well as Dr Pat said that the incident must have been caused by over stressing the lung-heart function of transfering oxygen from the air to my blood stream. I believe it was a combination of over stressing the lung-heart function exacerbated by the moisture being breathed in from the compressed air causing mucus to separate from the lung wall thereby causing a caughing and hacking episode. The combination of all over several minutes did not give the lungs time to extract the oxygen from the air being breathed in and thereby the heart had little oxygenated blood to pump.

Now as a result, the cardiologist who did the angiogram said he was a diver so he understood. In France and French Ploynesia, divers have to be recertified if they have any kind of heart incident. He said that I would not be able to find a doctor who would certify me for diving because of this incident. He also said that if I chose to dive to take it easy for the first couple of times. He said that I probably would not be able to dive with a commercial dive shop if they knew of this incident.

I will say that if I do dive with a dive shop, they will never be able to force me to move faster than I feel comfortable again.

So that is now all said and done. We are doing some boat chores and preparing to head to the leewared islands on Wednesday.

This is a heads up for a sailing trip. Lisa and I have decided we prefer not making long crossings of more than about 3-4 days. We will be looking for two crew members desiring to help us take the boat from Tonga to New Zealand. This may or may not be a cake walk as we will be reaching South to about 35 degrees and it would be the South Latittude equivelant to San Francisco north. We will accept only people we know for this first one and may venture further out on a limb when we bring Orcinius back up to the Island.

All for Now
