Off to Aitutaki Island

John
We sailed across to Maupiti from Bora Bora on Monday and spent the night. It was a 28 mile sail and pretty streight forward passage into the lagoon. I started an information net on SSB 6B with those leaving Bora Bora heading to the Cooks. We were the lead boat leaving.
The wind the last couple of days has been more out of the West which causes us to beat to weather. As of this afternoon it is starting to turn around and come out of the S and SE by tonight. Once we get the SE component we will be running a beam reach to Aitutaki and Raratonga. Plan on arriving at Aitutaki on Friday morning early and will wait for the high tide to enter the lagoon. Will hang in there until Sunday or Monday to make the run to Raratonga which will be a single overnighter.
We have been in contact with Andre the port Captain at Avatiu Harbor, Raratonga and he informs me that they are still doing some dredging for the next couple of week and cannot guarantee a spot for us. He said to check in when we get there to see availability. He also said we could anchor over at the old harbor of Avarua Pass. This situation has drawn us to taking in Aitutaki. Aitutaki is not available for most cruising yachts because the channel is only one fathom deep.
We have been checking in on the Pacific Seafarer's Net. This is a HAM net run by several HAM operators from around the Pacific and the US. Sailors in transit check in through a roll call on the HAM frequency of 14300 at 0325Z daily. Once you start to check in you are committed for the passage. If you decide not to check in for some reason, after two days of missed check ins, they will call the nearest rescue resources and tell them you are missing. Now having said that, I think it is a great resource to those of us who are making passages. If there are any problems they have the capability to put you in touch with the resource you need for the answers including medical emergencies.
Well it is time to move on to the weather so all for now!
John
