Palmerston Departure
The time has come to say farewell to Palmerston. The wind has been blowing like snot for the past three days and should be subsiding a little this afternoon and into the rest of the week. Besides we have already been here for a week and the Island isn't quite that big. Although the land and lagoon aren't quite that big the peoples hearts are. Every day we have been hosted by Tere Marsters or his sarragot hosts Ed, Simon, Shirley, Fiftieth and David. One meal ashore each day. Very good big meals. During the week the main stable is fish done in several different ways but on Sunday it was chicken. They had gathered up a couple of chickens and slaughtered them for the Sunday after church meal. It has been most excellent.
Lisa and I went to their 10 am service on Sunday at which Tere was the minister. Very nice service, lots of singing, one in english and the rest in Maori. The gentleman sitting behind us shared his hymnal and passage book with us during the service so we could be participants. Nicely done. After church we all went over to Ed, Simon and Shirley's for lunch. Before eating, Tere provided a service for Mama Atu because she cannot get around very well. Then we all sat at the table, said grace and dug in. Excellent dinner.
Yesterday, after helping Tere with a couple of things we had lunch at his house. Talked more about the culture and how things work in the Marster clan which is spread throughout Cook Islands, New Zealand and Australia. I am hoping Lisa will write up a piece on the Palmerston adventure during this next passage. After lunch we lounged around while he went back to work. Around 430pm he took us out to the boat and stayed for dinner. We had pre-made pizza dough and cut up vegetable for the pizza and I made and apple pie in the morning. We prepared the pizza had dinner and desert. By the time the meal was complete it was quite dark. Tere took some pizza and gifts with him and some pie over to Charisma then headed home through the dark narrow pass. I think Lisa jinxed him for getting through the pass because he got stuck and had to come back to one of the other boats and borrow a flashlight. Lisa could see him with the binoculars being stuck in the pass and had me call Simo n and Ed to give them a heads up. As it turned out Ed came out in his boat to help Tere get lined up on the pass. The big problem was it was an extreme high tide and the landmarks they are used to were not showing very well. When they were both safe ashore Fiftieth called and said all was well and to get a good night sleep.
Wonderful people!!!
