Looking for a sunken reef

30 August 2012 | 18 53..0'S:165 23.2'W, Half way to Beverage Reef
John
. While we are headed for Beverage Reef, it may be hard to find. Supposedly it is sunken and is generally not too visible. It is also reportedly not very well charted so will approach with caution.

We probably should have left a day earlier but weren't looking forward to 12-15 foot seas. As it was we were in 9 footers yesterday with a 15-18 footer every once in a while. The wind has backed off to 10-12 knots and directly out of the ENE pointing us right at the reef. We are flying wing on wing on a port tac and making a steady 5 knots. This morning we are in 5 foot seas spaced about 13 seconds apart. Good sleepng seas.

So the reef is hard to spot and the rim is mostly under water. Someone before us had found a passage into the lagoon which is supposed to average 12-14 foot of depth. We have a Lat-Long for the pass entry which is on the West side. At our current rate of travel we will arrive near the reef before daylight tomorrow so will have to stand clear by 10-15 miles until light.

We are hoping to anchor in the lagoon until Sunday when we will be heading for Niue which will be a single overnighter. Nieu is another one of those places that don't like quaranteened boats arriving on Sunday so that is why we will try to stay anchored at Beverage until Sunday.

So one would wonder why we would even want to go to a place like Beverage Reef. Well, those that have gone before us have said it is spectacular snorkeling. Besides, just think, we will be sailing through some of the deepest water in the world, 2-4 miles deep and in the middle of no where it all of a sudden is only 12 feet deep. That is one big mountain under the sea.

All for now, pictures later.
